No. 5 Texas Longhorns

10–3 in 2025, Citrus Bowl champions · AP preseason No. 5 · SP+ No. 6 (+22.8) · Steve Sarkisian, Year 6
Opener: Texas State, Sept 5 Win total: 9.5 (O +130 / U −156) Title odds: +650 Compiled Aug 26, 2026

The Bottom Line

The talent is a top-five roster. No. 4 in the talent composite in our snapshot, built around Arch Manning; the season is a test of whether a rebuilt defense and two new lead backs gel before the nation's second-hardest schedule arrives, which is Week 2. The market treats Texas as a playoff lock (−200 CFP at the August compile, −180 by the Sept 3 freeze) and co-second choice for the national title (+650, tied with Oregon, behind only Ohio State's +450), yet sets the win total at just 9.5. Those two prices together are a statement about the slate, not the roster: eight of twelve opponents sit in the SP+ preseason top 20, and No. 1 Ohio State visits Austin on September 12.

The offense returns 85% of its passing value and upgraded its weakest room; the defense lost four of the six draft picks and the coordinator who built it.

Honesty note: season expectations here are anchored to the market (win total, futures). The SP+ expected-wins number is reference-only: our backtest shows the SP+ margin model losing to the market.

Record caveat: 2025's 10–3 came with a +14 turnover margin, historically about one win of flattery on the record, not on the SP+ projection. The full argument lives in Last Season in Review.

Schedule Outlook

The second-hardest schedule in FBS by average opponent preseason SP+ (No. 2 of 138, computed across every team's slate, only Arkansas's is harder, and Texas is the lone top-ten slate with no FCS breather): nine SP+ top-50 opponents, and only one of the four hardest dates. Ohio State, in Austin; the other three are trips to Tennessee, LSU, and Texas A&M. Win probabilities are computed from preseason SP+ (points better than average, schedule-adjusted): the ratings gap, plus 2.5 points for the home team, converted to a win chance using how far our model's projections have historically missed (details in the Data Dictionary). Treat them as a shape, not picks. Shaded rows are coin flips (40–60%).

WkDateOpponent (SP+ rank)SiteSP+ marginWin probability
So whatSumming the probabilities gives about eight expected wins, call it 7–9, against a market total of 9.5, meaning the market prices Texas roughly a touchdown better than its SP+ line ("top-five roster, top-six rating"). The season swings on the four shaded coin flips (Missouri, at 61%, is effectively a fifth): split them and 10–2 makes the playoff comfortably; lose them and the Under cashes with the same roster, and the only clear-underdog game, Ohio State, is the rematch of 2025's 7–14 opening-night loss.

The Roster Ledger

Movement through the 2026 draft and portal, quantified against the 2025 snapshot. Returning production is the share of last season's total play value (PPA) that's back on the roster, the forward-looking stat with the best year-over-year track record. Definitions live in the Data Dictionary.

What returns

Overall · % of PPA returning
72%
Passing · % of PPA returning
85%
Receiving · % of PPA returning
55%

Rushing gets no bar: the share computes to 126%, more returning value than the 2025 team netted, because the departing backs' combined PPA was negative. The plain fact behind the broken number: nearly all the rushing value that returns is Manning's.

So whatThe passing game carries over nearly whole, the spine of the projection, while the receiving room returns barely half its value and was rebuilt through the portal. The number the bars can't show: the defense, which doesn't produce PPA, lost four of the six draft picks plus its coordinator: that's where the real rebuild is.

So whatThe portal class is a direct answer key: two lead backs for the worst room on the 2025 offense, a proven WR1-type for Moore's vacated targets, a playmaking linebacker for Hill's spot, and new specialists for both kicking jobs. What it can't import is continuity, a new center, new guard, new backfield, and new defensive signal-callers all have to cohere in the same September.

So whatThe 2025 splits are the whole story: 81st-percentile passing-downs PPA against a 26th-percentile passing success rate (plays gaining enough, e.g., 5+ yds on 1st-and-10), elite when it broke down, streaky on schedule. A year-two leap plus an actual run game is the Heisman path; watch whether the success rate closes toward the big-play rate in September.

Colin Simmons · EDGE

So whatThe front's 82nd-percentile havoc rate is the one piece of the 2025 defense that returns mostly intact, and it runs through him, how Muschamp deploys Simmons is the first real signal of what the new defense wants to be. If the sack pace holds, the rebuilt secondary gets to play behind a broken pocket.

Ryan Wingo · WR

So whatTexas's 2025 offense lived on explosives (90th percentile) and Wingo's 15.4 a catch was a big reason. With Coleman on the other side he should see fewer brackets than any season of his career, watch whether defenses still rotate safety help his way, because single coverage is the whole payoff of the receiver-room rebuild.

Cam Coleman · WR

The marquee offensive portal add: a former five-star who carried Auburn's passing game as its lead outside receiver, now the projected X across from Wingo.

So whatHe inherits the boundary role that DeAndre Moore Jr.'s 31.7 total PPA vacated, and he's the biggest bet in the portal class: a contested-catch X receiver stepping into the best QB situation of his career. If Coleman commands doubles, Wingo and Mosley live in single coverage, his red-zone target share in the opener is the first read on whether the receiving room reloaded or just refilled.

Jelani McDonald · S

Passed on the NFL draft to return, and is now the only returning starter in a secondary that lost Muhammad and Taaffe, the new scheme's on-field brain.

So whatBlake Gideon's secondary has exactly one veteran voice, and camp reporting says McDonald has claimed the room. He's the difference between a rebuilt secondary that miscommunicates in September and one that survives until the transfers settle in, the Ohio State game will test it immediately.

Rasheem Biles · LB

So whatHill's production was the hardest single loss to replace, and Biles is the closest thing the portal offered: a hundred-tackle volume defender who also scored three times in 2025 (two pick-sixes and a scoop-and-score). Watch him on passing downs next to Simmons, if Muschamp trusts him in coverage, the second level stops being a question.

The Backfield Battle: Brown vs. Smothers

Camp battle
Raleek Brown · via Arizona State

So whatThe 2025 room ranked 39th percentile in rushing PPA and the lead back averaged 0.095 PPA per play, either transfer is an upgrade, and the likeliest outcome is a split: Brown the home-run hitter, Smothers on third downs. Whoever takes the opener's first series won the only vote that counts.

Unit Outlook Board

Each unit's note leads with its computed 2025 percentile on a headline metric (vs. all FBS, garbage time excluded; higher = always better); the chip is our call for 2026 on a fixed four-tier scale, Strength · Lean strength · Open question · Rebuilt. Where the call disagrees with the number, the note says why, usually because the players who earned the number are gone. (No bars here on purpose: bars are for comparing two units on one metric, which is the weekly Matchup Board's job.)

QB & passing gameOutlook: Strength
2025: 63rd-percentile passing PPA/play · 85% of passing value returns in Manning. The growth axis is consistency: passing success rate was just 26th percentile.
Run gameOutlook: Open question
2025: 39th-percentile rushing PPA/play, a backfield that no longer exists · both lead backs are new and both out-produced the room they replace. Biggest possible single-unit swing on the roster.
Receivers & TEOutlook: Lean strength
2025: 90th-percentile offensive explosiveness (how big the successful plays are) · 55% of receiving value returns; the No. 2 target left, Coleman arrived. Deep speed carried 2025 and is still here.
Offensive lineOutlook: Open question
2025: 36th-percentile line yards/carry (run yards credited to the blocking) · three of five starters return but the alignment is unsettled, two interior spots are new, and the projected left tackle's knee is in doubt (see injury report). The quiet risk under everything.
Defensive line & edgeOutlook: Lean strength
2025: 82nd-percentile front-seven havoc (plays wrecked, sacks, TFLs, forced fumbles) · Simmons returns, Trey Moore doesn't; Kanu, Geffrard, and Jackson hold the interior. The most intact piece of the defense.
LinebackersOutlook: Rebuilt
2025: 54th-percentile second-level yards allowed (run yards 5–10 yards past the line) · Hill drafted, Lefau portaled; Biles, Cryer, and Spence are a brand-new trio behind a good front.
SecondaryOutlook: Rebuilt
2025: 69th-percentile DB havoc (plays wrecked, picks, breakups, TFLs), a number that mostly left with Muhammad and Taaffe · one returning starter (McDonald) and a new scheme. The chip grades the 2026 unit, not the departed one.
Special teamsOutlook: Open question
2025: 85th-percentile starting field position (average starting yard line of drives) · elite, but both specialist jobs turned over, the new K and P arrive with credible, verified résumés (depth chart notes). Niblett's return game is the carried-forward weapon.
CoachingOutlook: Rebuilt (defense)
No percentile, no honest metric. Sarkisian's offense enters year six of continuity; the defense changes architects: Kwiatkowski out, Will Muschamp in, Blake Gideon running the secondary.

Percentiles are computed by our metrics pipeline over the committed 2025 data snapshot. Chips are this report's judgment.

Camp Intel

Fall camp opened Aug 5, a month out from the Texas State opener. Storylines below are news with sources; the analysis lives in the sections above.

August Storylines

  • The defense has a new architect: Sarkisian fired five-year DC Pete Kwiatkowski (now with the Arizona Cardinals) and did not retain DB legend Duane Akina; Will Muschamp takes over the defense with Blake Gideon returning from Georgia Tech (where he coordinated the 2025 defense) to run the secondary. ESPN (offseason)
  • The backfield is a two-transfer race: Brown and Smothers lead the RB competition, with Derrek Cooper, James Simon, and Michael Terry III behind them. Roundtable (Aug 6)
  • Kaliq Lockett is the camp-buzz name: the blue-chip 2025 signee is "playing up to his recruiting background" and pushing the projected receiver three. A to Z Sports (Aug 14)
  • Jelani McDonald owns the secondary: after passing on the draft, he's "generating a ton of noise" as the rebuilt unit's vocal leader, with Mascoe, Filsaime, Phillips, and Littleton drawing praise around him. A to Z Sports (Aug 14)
  • Fourth-youngest roster in FBS: even after 22 portal additions, Texas enters 2026 among the youngest teams in the country. The Daily Texan (Aug 11)
  • Pads came on Aug 11: first full-contact practice of camp, with Sarkisian publicly pleased with the team's physicality. Burnt Orange Nation (Aug 11)

Availability & Injury Report

PlayerUnitInjuryStatus
Trevor GoosbyLTKnee (bone bruise)Good to go for the opener, per Sarkisian at Thursday's press conference (On3, Horns247), after returning to practice Sept 1. No PPA-share impact is computable for linemen; Andre Cojoe seasoned as the swing tackle during his absence.
Laurence SeymoreLGUndisclosed, minorGood to go, per Sarkisian at Thursday's press conference (Horns247). Was limited in the first scrimmage; no long-term concern reported.
Samari MatthewsCBUndisclosedThe true freshman was reported absent from early camp practices, reason undisclosed; no update since.
Yaheim RileyDBKnee (brace)Practicing in a brace; no reported concern for the season.

Checked Aug 26 against SI's fall camp injury tracker (latest entry Aug 17); Goosby's return to practice confirmed Sept 1 (SI). Re-checked at the Week 1 freeze (Sept 3): Goosby and Seymore cleared at Sarkisian's Thursday press conference; no other availability changes surfaced in the game-week sweep.

Corrections (Sept 3 freeze fact-check, fixed in place per the errata protocol): Ty'Anthony Smith was dismissed for "conduct detrimental to the team" (earlier wording implied an unexplained departure); Blake Gideon arrives from Georgia Tech, not Georgia; UTSA is Sept 19 and the A&M finale is Friday Nov 27 (dates were off by one); Jaime Ffrench's name and 2025 role, and Liona Lefau's two-year-starter status, were understated; Cryer now carries the portal marker; title odds are +650 tied with Oregon. Transfer stat lines quote the committed CFBD snapshots and may differ from outlet totals by bowl-game scope.

Last Season in Review

Texas went 10–3: 9–3 in the regular season, then a Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. This is the baseline the 2026 team is projected from, weekly reports link here instead of re-telling it.

Efficiency profile (national percentile)

Every percentile is oriented so higher = better, whichever direction the raw stat runs, a 79th-percentile "explosiveness allowed" means Texas gave up fewer big plays than 79% of FBS.

MetricTexas 2025What it means
Off. EPA/play0.179 (52%)Scoring value added per snap, the core "how efficient is this offense" stat.
Off. success rate40.5% (29%)% of plays that stay "on schedule" (half the needed yards on 1st down, all of them by 3rd). Consistency.
Off. explosiveness1.37 (90%)How big the successful plays are. Ceiling, not floor.
Line yards/carry2.83 (36%)Yards on a carry credited to the line's push, not the back.
Def. EPA/play0.104 (71%)Value allowed per snap. Lower = better defense.
Def. explosiveness allowed1.18 (79%)Size of the plays a defense gives up, the "big-play problem" stat.
Front-seven havoc11.2% (82%)% of snaps where the front made a disruptive play (sack, TFL, forced fumble).
DB havoc6.7% (69%)% of snaps where DBs made a disruptive play (INT, PBU, TFL, forced fumble).
So whatThe 2025 identity in one line: a boom-or-bust offense (90th-percentile explosives, 29th-percentile consistency) behind a below-average run-blocking line, carried by a defense that disrupted at an elite rate. The 2026 additions map onto exactly those numbers, backs and a center for the consistency problem, while the defense tries to keep the havoc without the men who created most of it.

Turnover-luck check (backtested indicator)

MetricTexas 2025What it means
TO margin / game+1.08 (+14 total)Takeaways minus giveaways per game. Beyond ±0.5, history says it snaps back.
Fumble margin+5Fumbles recovered minus lost. Recovering a live ball is ~a coin flip, this is the luckiest stat in football.
INT margin+9Picks made minus thrown. Partly skill (QB decisions, ballhawking DBs), partly bounce.
So what+1.08 per game is double the regression threshold, in our 2023–25 backtest such teams lost about one win of record the following season, and that discounts the 10–3 record and the hype built on it, never the SP+ projection, which is efficiency-based and mostly turnover-blind. The semi-durable share of the +9 INT margin traveled with DBs now in the NFL; in-season tracking lives in the weekly reports.
